Q&A with Brooklyn's Future Punx about gear and the creative process

Finding inspiration in the dancy, angular post-punk of bands like Devo, the early Stranglers, and even Blondie, Brooklyn's Future Punx have delivered with "I'm So Inspired" (recent Deli NYC Record of the Month) one of the most fun NYC albums of 2014 . We asked guitarist Jake Pepper a few questions about the band's creative process, read the Q&A on our sister blog Delicious Audio.

Future Punx next NYC show will be at Baby's All Right on 05.15.

NYC Record of the Month: Future Punx - "I'm So Inspired" EP

Few rock albums have been at once as daring and fun as Devo's debut "Q: Are We Not Men?" and we are always ecstatic when we hear exciting new local music referencing the band that managed to make Ohio glamorous (at least for a year or two). The NYC scene doesn't need any more glamor, but it sure can use a record like Future Punx's new EP "I'm So Inspired." The record represents a rather drastic change for the band: compared to their previous, more experimental and droney releases, more attention was shifted towards arrangements, melody and structure, i.e. production. On our favorite track "Plus Side," a web of funky guitars and farfisas creates an intriguing post-punk setting, letting singer Chris Pickering's deadpan tenor tie together the various elements with a few well picked notes. Opener "I'm so inspired" and third track "Forgive the Doubt" confirm the flirtations with both the post punk of the early '80s and funk music, with the latter providing the most memorable chorus of the EP. Closing track "See You in the Future" doubles the fun with keyboard madness, teutonic angularity and bizarre call and response vocals reminiscent of early The Stranglers - another stellar band of the '80s that's criminally under-referenced in today's pervasive '80s revival. JP's CMJ 2014 Day 2: Caveman, Wampire, Splashh, Celestial Shore, J Ferdinand, Icewater, Ronald Paris, Future Punx

I had a bit of a late start today. I slept through three alarms, and when I finally did wake up, I felt like I had cement running through my veins. Sore, hungover, out of it. It was well past noon and I had wanted, or planned, already to be caffeinated, at a show, and to have had my day 1 recap written; not to be standing over a stove reheating the chicken over rice with white sauce I’d impulsively gotten at 4am. Sonofabitch. I shot over (and by shot, I very much mean moseyed) to Cake Shop for the Terrorbird showcase. Clearly it had been underway a good amount. Between eating godawful leftovers, writing up yesterday’s happenings, crawling into a shower and then crawling to the coffee shop, it was something like 4pm! It’s a terrible feeling when it’s the first time you’re stepping outside for the day, and you can see that the sun’s already starting to go down. Keep Reading JP Basileo's CMJ 2014 Day 2 report.
