Haley Heynderickx's Tiny Desk Performance

Here at the Deli, we love it when great local artists get the recognition they deserve. Local favorite Haley Heynderickx was not only just featured in Rolling Stone, but she also just got on NPR’s Tiny Desk! Heynderickx, known for rich vocals and a uniquely dark folksy style, has just returned to town after a summer on tour.

Her Tiny Desk performance is true to form. Heynderickx is endearing as always, tender both in attitude and in her music. At one point the band gives 5 seconds of “intimate eye contact” to the camera, so as to show the people back home that they love them. Well Haley, you're equally as loved and we’re glad to have you back.

Vikesh Kapoor releases new track "Down By The River"

Vikesh Kapoor has his mastery of acoustic folk down to a science. For the last three years, the Pennsylvania transplant took to Portland's usual grey skies smoothly in the further development of his songwriting and musicianship. Kind of like Portland's own Iron & Wine, his music progresses in a similar manner to the beverage, only getting better and better as it ages with time.

"Down By The River" is the newest track to come from Kapoor. It's beautiful in its simplicity, with Kapoor's vocal delivery and strumming gently guiding the listener throughout the song. It's a track perfect for a summer evening drive or being stuck inside all day watching the rain fall.

Vikesh Kapoor is officially dropping the single tonight at his show at the Beacon Sound, with accompanying sets from Haley Heynderickx and Claire Puckett of the Austin, Tx orchestral indie band Mother Falcon. The all-ages show starts at 8pm and is just $10.

Laura Palmer's DEATH PARADE's Residency is in Full Effect

In conjunction with this weekend's Sabertooth Music Fest, Showdeer and Al's Den are hosting Laura Palmer's DEATH PARADE as their residency for the next six days. Though it technically started last night, many special guests will be joining in on the dark psych folk fun, led by the beautiful swoon of Laura Hopkins.

Jetlag from their recent UK tour won't stop this trio from giving it all they've got for the rest of the week, with local favorites like Nathan Baumgartner of And And And, Dim Wit, Sweeping Exits, Cat Hoch, and Bryson Cone aiding in the excitement.

See the flyer above for a breakdown of each night's LPDP pairings. Each night is free, 21+ and starts at 7pm so if you're gearing up to head out for the night, stop by Al's Den and see them tonight with Haley Heynderickx.

Girl Fest is Giving Us Life

A much needed celebration of female power, Girl Fest is back with a showcase of some of Portland's best female musicians of the moment. Hosted by the soulful Blossom, this year's installation of GF touches on a few different genres, including jazz, folk and hip hop, to me enjoyed by all ages.

Coco Columbia has been a local love we've grow to appreciate more and more, with her refreshingly modern and eclectic take on jazz. Her voice, along with her production, have become indicative of the variety of other music scenes the city provides.

Other upbeat offerings come from some of the only female rap artists in Portland's market right now, including Karma Rivera. Taking a beat and fully making it her own, Karma's rhymes give the best of relatable expression and fun quips. Building off of that, duo Neka & Kahlo mix angelic bedroom pop with hip hop that results in a trappy type R&B that we need much more of.

Courtney Noe could easily dominate the pop charts with her retro ballads and after the Fish Eye EP, we've been dying for more of Haley Heynderickx's acoustic folk.

Thankfully Girl Fest 2017 is still happening tonight at the Crystal Ballroom. It's an all ages show, including some performances from young artists involved with local youth music nonprofit My Voice Music, so bring all your loved ones out for a night of true female empowerment.

PREMIERE: Sheers - "Depth"

Art pop and classical stylings converge with elemental hip-hop and r&b through the new duo Sheers, and their distinctive debut single "Depth."

Lily Breshears heads up the duo, bringing her seasoned experience from working with artists such as Big Haunt and Haley Heynderickx along with classical training as a harpist and pianist to the table. Intertwined with her mastered piano playing are melodic refrains, emotionally pertinent lyrics and jazzy beats from drummer and collaborator Grant Pierce.

Produced by both Sheers and Scott Schaus and mastering done by David Polluck, "Depth" is only the starting point for what is sure to be an established effort for Breshears.

Sheers will be playing Mississippi Studios with Robin Bacior on the 17th, with a co-album release show also at Mississippi with Lynnae Gryffin on September 19th.

Check out the official premiere of "Depth" below.
