Kuroma releases 'The Dark Horse Rides Again' LP at Union Poll 10/5

From the sound of it, psych-pop band Kuroma's latest release, "Perfect Girl," might have been written under the influence of a serious summer crush. Starting simply with a strumming acoustic guitar, the track slowly builds, erupting into rich layers of orchestral instrumentation - is that the sound of soaring love? Though the arrangement gets more complex as the tune progresses, "Perfect Girl" manages to remain grounded, courtesy of Hank Sullivant's dulcet vocals hovering over the mix. The result is a tune that sounds as if it was plucked from a mid-60's summer top 40 chart. Read about Kuroma's creative process + see them live at LPR on 04.23

Started by former Whigs and current MGMT guitarist Hank Sullivant in 2008, NYC Indie pop band Kuroma has gone through various inceptions before finally settling on their current one, the line-up rounded out by James Richardson and Will Berman of MGMT and Simon O'Connor of Amazing Baby. Considering the incredible background of all musicians involved in this project (who also work as producers), we thought it would be interesting to know a thing or two about their favorite gear and how they tackle the creative and recording processes. We asked Hank a few questions in this regard here.

If you dig the band, you shouldn't miss their upcoming show at Les Poisson Rouge on April 23.

Kuroma unveils video for "Simon's In The Jungle"

After the gloom and doom of a brutally cold NYC winter, NYC/Athens band Kuroma give us a great excuse to rejoyce the way good old Christians do, only for something a little more mundane: the anticipation of summer! The band's new video "Simon's In The Jungle" and its colorful animations are like a pure shot of aural sun. Look out for their debut album our in April.

NYC/Athens supergroup Kuroma announces debut LP 'Kuromarama'

Feel-good riffs and a dancy rhythm section constitute the majority of Kuroma’s first full-band record, 'Kuromarama,' out April 7 on Votiv Music. The Athens/Brooklyn based band was conceptualized in 2008 by MGMT’s current guitarist Hank Sullivant, but was only recently fully realized, having signed on James Richardson and Will Berman (also of MGMT), and Simon O’Connor of Amazing Baby as permanent members. The result is an almost reggae-infused funk-rock that is danceable, yet soulful. Their first single, “Love is on the Way,” approaches the retro minimalistic structure of 80’s pop (with almost an islander feel thrown in), but it breathes fresh life into any preconceptions with a cool layering of keys, steadily novel percussion, and vocal brilliance that oscillates between hearty substantiality and far-out falsetto.
