DOUBLE PREMIERE: Melt - "Take a Walk" & Mister Tang - "Where You Goin?"

If there's one thing Portland can seem to do right, it's produce some fun lovin', beer chuggin', good ass garage rock. Today, the Deli is premiering two new, soon to be hit singles from a couple of the best garage acts in town, Melt and Mister Tang. Both bands share a member or two, but don't think that makes them in any way the same.

Melt's single, "Take a Walk," coming off their upcoming Fun House tape, takes a fuzzier surf route to the genre, with Jeff Tang's vocals being refreshingly nostalgic to the genre's predecessors.

"Where You Goin?," the Mister Tang track on the cassette of the same name, is grittier, more raw, and straight up rock n' roll. Stone Tang delivers the lyrics frankly and unforgivingly in your face, drawing you in.

Both Mister Tang and Melt are also going on tour together in celebration of the tapes' releases, which are both dropping within days of each other. To kick it all off, a show featuring both of them, the Deli Portland Emerging Artist of the Month nominees A Volcano and a famed special guest will be happening next week, March 10th, at the Liquor Store. Cassettes and tees will be available to fund the tour. It'll be an auspiciously awesome situation for everyone involved, so be sure you're there to witness it. You'd be Better Off Dead than missing it.

Preview: White Mystery + Mister Tang at Bunk 11.1

The day after Halloween is the perfect time to gently nurse your hangover (with candy), wipe the residual makeup and fake blood off your body (with candy wrappers), kick your feet up (on your heap of candy), have a couple Reese’s for breakfast, snort some pixie stix and GET HYPER, MAN! Then bring all that sticky, sugary energy down to Bunk Bar (1028 SE Water Ave, Portland, OR 97214) for some wacky and frenetic jollification with White Mystery, The Cry, Mister Tang, and DJ Andrew Loomis (of Dead Moon!).

Chicago’s own brother-sister powerduo White Mystery is a sludgy rock band best compared, fortuitously, to Nashville’s own brother-brother powerduo Jeff the Brotherhood. They play the same brand of cheeky, shreddy, fuzz-saturated, burners. Also they’re rocking the Orange amp so you can bet they’ll be playing heavy enough to have you involuntarily bowing down after a single power chord.

Have you ever noticed a group of 3-4 startlingly well-dressed neo-modsters with that Manchester haircut stalking local shows and wondered if they’re all in a band? That’s The Cry. Their ’60s inspired garage-pop is so sticky sweet you won’t be sure if its the music or the Jolly Ranchers in your ears. Afterward, Mister Tang will corrode said Jolly Ranchers out of those ears with their acidic, lo-fi, garage-punk jams.

To cap off the night, buy a damn sandwich and get something else in your system besides sugar for god’s sake. That shit’s bad for you.

Preview: Shred of the Dead 2014

There's an unnecessary push to party sometimes. During certain holidays, people expect you to GET OUT THERE and UNLEASH THE BEAST. Well, now there's an appropriate reason to do both of those things at the very least this upcoming weekend.

Over the course of three significant nights, October 30th through November 1st, Buzzface presents have curated a festival destined to live up to its name: Shred of the Dead.

Beginning on Thursday, October 30th, Dante's will host Tango Alpha Tango, The Grizzled Mighty, Fox and the Law and Foxy Lemon. The costume contest begins. Attendees will have a rare chance to wear whatever they want inside a place with a couple of catwalks and listen to amazing, heavier sounds from the Pacific Northwest.

Halloween night, Minden, Animal Eyes, the Lower 48, Cambrian Explosion and Chrome Lakes will play Star Theater. This is where the costume contest ends.

November 1st, White Mystery, the Cry and Mister Tang close the entire event with one final rager at Bunk Bar.

Deli Portland Presents: Ah God // Cambrian Explosion // Mister Tang

Once you can come to terms with the fact that "typically amusing Saturday nights" never actually work out for you, you'll realise you should just go to the Deli Portland showcase at Kelly's Olympian. We've already gone ahead and taken care of all the planning for you and there will be three amazing bands, cheap booze and tons of chicks. Heading the night, Ah God, differential in their distant vibes, layered vocals and slightly-off melodies will make you feel cozy in the same way that sitting in a strange cabin in the middle of nowhere makes you feel. You're warm. There's no harm. You're incredibly stimulated in being in a new place with new people and you're taking in the new tunes. Before them, Cambrian Explosion do more than waltz with Eastern psychedelic rock, they intermingle in the most intimate ways. The band has been carving out a reputation for themselves in the Portland Psych movement and have been recognized for a reason. Opening the night like a 5-hour energy drink, Mister Tang have the ability to shift your mindscape with a single jolt estranged guitar. Stone and Jeff Tang mesmerize and intoxicate with their transcendental garage rock. Each band's sets will be recorded live and have a track contributed to a forthcoming Deli Portland/Kelly's Olympian/Revolver Studios live compilation. Doors at 8pm, the show begins at 9 and the cover is $5 which all goes to bands. SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC.
