Roses announce debut full-length, share new single "Accessory"

Roses are no stranges to this blog. From their luscious Dreamlover EP to last year's single "Quiet Time", the synth rock trio has been steadily growing into a bone fide new wave act with their slick, jangly love songs. "Accessory", their latest single off of their upcoming debut full-length Camera Trouble, is another jittery pop cut with a new romantic flair that continues their love affair with bands like The Cure and The Wake.

Camera Trouble is out on October 28 via Group Tightener. The band will be playing new songs at the Hi Hat alongside French Vanilla on September 9. - Juan Rodríguez

Live Review: Froth at Echoplex 11/12

It was too cold at the Echoplex last night. People inside were huddled up in jackets, but Roses warmed up the audience with some new dreamy jams — guitarist Juan Velasquez also called on the staff to turn down the AC.

Froth's van made it back, too. The guys looked beat after their North American tour with The Drums and Tamaryn, but this was the final stretch and their homecoming show. JooJoo seemed lax, but the crew simply crushed it with songs from their newest album Bleak — memorables like the drowner "Afternoon" and that upbeat "Postcard Radio" that swept Lollipoppers off their feet.

By 11, the venue was packed, and people were easing out of their jackets. Eyes were fixated on Tamaryn, starstruck and eager to hear Cranekiss live. A girl shouted, "You're so dreamy!" After that performance, we're inclined to agree.

Get some FOMO from the show on our Instagram, and catch Froth and Tamaryn again at the San Diego Music Thing this weekend. - Ryan Mo

Gravepunk duo Band Aparte plays Echo Park Rising tomorrow

From down the end of Los Angeles, the barebones gravepunk duo Band Aparte strips down and combines elements of gothic rock, synthpunk, and beachy lo-fi as macabré appreciation simmers in the gut of the city.

Vocalist Brian Mendoza effortlessly channels Joy Division and Nick Cave, crooning into a death bouquet with his shirt unbuttoned. But he's not doing it to imitate Morrissey's aesthetic — Band Aparte's shows are fast and fierce, and the crowd works up a sweat at every venue they play. Josh Hensley's psychotic textures gnaw and bite at the ears, from sharp velcro fuzz to buoyant modulations that pair with relentless drum machine beats like deliriants to narcotics. It's a dangerous mixture that has crushed nights alongside Cruelty Code, Roses, Ghost Noise, and Terminal A.

Find Band Aparte this Saturday at Echo Park Rising — playing 4:30pm at Lot 1 Café. Listen to their eponymous track from their EP "Enter" below. - Ryan Mo

Spanish surf shoegaze-y Crystales performing tonight at Pehrspace

Crystales are a band from Highland Park sporting that ‘60s beach vibe with fuzzy facial hair and fuzz pedals. Brothers Nick and Billy Gil go halfsies on guitar and vocals while Jason Hanakeawe and Tony Infante keep the crew rocking. Splashing through C86 guitar tones with just the right amount of reverb and kicking down walls of sound, Crystales have shimmered through Los Angeles and Pasadena nights with Roses, Michael Vidal, and Hyacinth Girl.

Join them tonight at Pehrspace as they open for Young Lovers’ night of residency with Echophonix and Judy Gloom, and next weekend at Make Music Pasadena. Listen to “I Don’t Care” below. - Ryan Mo
