Sean Barna

Celebrate survival with Seán Barna's "Eastern Junk Dancing"

Seán Barna is an enigmatic everyman. For all the various idiosyncratic struggles he processes on new single “Eastern Junk Dancing,” the experiences of “scraping together whatever money you can to galavant up and down the last coast in a tour van,” the mental gymnastics of re-interpreting the steely resolve of Margaret Thatcher as a way to merely exist as a queer person, they’re delightfully idiosyncratic, yet immediately resonate with anyone who’s had to hustle for the dream or persevere despite feelings of inadqueacy or non-normalcy. These quotidian trials as narrative, which Barna chronicles in melancholy-yet-hopeful voice, one that evokes equal parts Destroyer and David Bowie, against a glammy, acoustic vamp, makes for a joyful bop; it’s a celebration of the radical act of staying alive, which after all, is something worth commemorating, if even for a few fleeting hours on Houston Street. Listen to it below if you’re feeling doubtful of your own starpower to remind yourself that, despite it all, you’re still here. —Connor Beckett McInerney

Seán Barna reps NYC's indie folk at this year's SXSW

Seán Barna is an indie folk artist who wears an intimidating amount of hats—songwriter, vocalist, percussionist, guitarist, storyteller, influencer. Beginning with just ‘percussionist’ under his belt at nine years of age, Barna has been building his artist resume since his 2014 debut, Cutter Street. His music is insightful and exploratory, and has gained serious momentum also because of its social and cultural influences. His latest EP Cissy speaks on subjects regarding queerness, mental illness, mortality and national desperation, which far surpasses any 2-D conversation that a drum kit alone might bring to the table. Cissy is candid, calculated and weighed by heavy contemplation on masculinity, creating a stunning and sensitive form of songwriting. This recipe seems to working for the local artist: Barna will be trekking to Austin this year for the SXSW Music Festival. Catch Seán Barna live at SXSW in March and stream his latest EP Cissy on Soundcloud. - Rebecca Carroll

Sean Barna EP release show at The Lot, tonight (9/6)!

Anyone who's seen Sean Barna live knows he's the most passionate performer in DC. Barna's new EP, Cutter Street, is a culmination of years of desire, experience, ambition and heart. Self-described as "slutty folk," Barna's music music reminds me most of the soulful and woeful Irish style, with a performance and lyrics reaching Van Morrison levels of exuberance, drama, and emotional honesty. Sean Barna, winner of the DC Area Deli Artist of the Month, is a force on stage, a delight in person, and a performer to watch at any given opportunity. You can go watch him for free, tonight (6/9), at The Lot (@ Atlantic Plumbing--behind the 9:30 Club), starting 7PM, in DC.  --Natan Press
