See Tristen Play Exit/In Tonight

Monday night, Passion Pit canceled their show at Marathon Music Works, so the band that was going to open for them (Future Islands) scheduled a free show the same night at the Exit/In. I hadn’t really listened to Future Islands much, but I went anyway. And god, I’m glad that I did. This post isn’t about them, though they’re great-- it’s about their opening band, Nashville-based Tristen.

I smoked a Lucky and walked in. The three band members were onstage, setting up. There was the lead guitarist, Buddy, the bassist Jordan, and then Tristen on acoustic. Everything seemed pretty relaxed, soundcheck and all. But then they started playing. And she can sing. She can really sing. You know those high notes that you wince at because no one can ever hit them and you wish they just wouldn’t try? Well she can hit them, and there’s a timbre to her voice that is too perfect. It reminds me a little of Neko Case, but a little more raw. She can get guttural (don’t you hate that word?) and screamy too. She gave me goosebumps.

And what a great show! They’re all talented. Buddy, who I’ve found out is actually Tristen’s fiancé, is a great lead guitarist. I enjoyed watching him; his blues influenced licks make their edgy folk even edgier. Jordan is a solid bassist and sings great harmonies. When they sang “Heart and Hope To Die” I shivered every time they harmonized. You can check that song out below.

They’re playing another show tonight. It’s at the Exit/In, and if you don’t go, I’ll be disappointed in you. --Ben Dunn

Q & A with Deli Nashville poll winner, Tristen

Tristen was declared number one for The Deli Nashville’s Best of 2011 poll just a couple months ago, so we caught up with one of our favorite singin' ladies for a quickie interview about a year full of success. Check it out here.

Interview with Tristen

- by Jessica Pace

Last year, you played SXSW right around the release of Charlatans at the Garden Gate. How do you think this year's SXSW set will be different?

I'll be playing a lot of new songs. The set is almost completely new material, with a few oldies mixed in.
When did you first begin playing music?
My parents recall that I started singing as soon as I could speak at age two or so, and I began playing piano at the age of eight. Guitar came in when I was a teenager and right around when I started to write songs.
Last year was a successful one for you after the release of your record. What were the highlights for you?
Some highlights: shaking Joan Jett's hand, the deserts of New Mexico, touring with Justin Townes Earle, Steve Jones playing “Eager for your Love” on his radio show, our show at Bonnaroo.
Favorite venue you've played?
Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown, California. Diiiiig.
This spring, you'll be touring with another talented artist, Justin Townes Earle. How did that come about?
Justin Townes Earle, who lives in Nashville just like you and me, asked me to open for him in December in the northeast and I said yes. Yes...yes.
What are you working on now?
Singing, playing piano a lot lately, recording, touring. I just finished another record, Caves. I've been working on that since August.

TRISTEN

Lost Lander

Nashville can’t get enough of Tristen, and neither can The Deli's staff and readers, as it turns out. And it’s with good reason: the pop chanteuse with the honeyed vocals, who first came to Nashville only with the intent of writing songs rather than performing them, gained her notoriety last year with the stunningly gorgeous folk pop record "Charlatans at the Garden Gate". The loosely conceptual, debut full-length provoked a “wow” from listeners far beyond Music City, including NPR, Rolling Stone and the Wall Street Journal. The positive response Charlatans is racking up is well-deserved and a long time coming. Don't miss her at SXSW

NATURAL CHILD

The title of Natural Child's debut album says it all: "1971". This is revival rock at its best, with a range of influences spanning from Stooges to Rolling Stones to The Beatles and even some Nashville style good old folk. Who doesn't like good old rock'n'roll?

HEAVY CREAM

Heavy Cream's good looks surely enhance their blues-chord-tinged punk-rock 'n roll, but this band knows how to maxime the audience's sentiment of love for - well, again, damnit - singalongs. Singer Jessica McFarland bounces, belts and squeals her way through every catchy Cream chorus. Her special band helpers ripped and roared. It's only Rock'n'Roll, but it rocks and it rollls, ok?

RANCH GHOST

Pub music, when played as well (and as loud) as it should be, can contribute to spectacular nightly experiences. Ranch Ghost know something about this, and their unpretentious garage/rock'n'roll is the ideal soundtrack to your alcohol filled adventures.
