Deem Spencer releases new EP 'Sunflower,' to perform at Don Pedro on 10/25

The blurring of the lines between the hip-hop and RnB genres has been an exciting development in recent years. Headliners like Frank Ocean, and Isaiah Rashad have highlighted a generation of emcees that like to sing, or crooners that spit bars on ocassion. deem spencer is an emerging Queens based artist that belongs to this category. Over the past year, the he has maintained a steady stream of output, culiminating in the release of his Sunflowers EP a month ago. Spencer's appeal as an artist lies in striking, abstract lyrics and tense, atmospheric production. His backing instrumentals, while lush, are also stripped down, allowing for his poetic lyrics and soft vocals, whether they be sung or rapped, to take center stage. If his music puts you in the mood, you can check him out live on 10/16 at Don Pedro. - Henry Solotaroff-Webber

New Music Video: "Bring Yo Friends" - Tunji Ige

Josh “Glassface” Goldenberg merges an interesting series of imagery in the video for “Bring Yo Friends,” found on Tunji Ige’s mixtape Missed Calls. An old-school premiere countdown opens the proceedings. Then, a mixture of black & white, low-key Brooklyn bridge performance visuals, interspersed with flashes of widespread settings and morphing animation, give the production a chill but hyperactive touch.

RIP NYC Indie Hip Hop pillar Majesty

We learned that MC Majesty passed away this past week. Along with Dayv “Mental” Cino, Majesty helped found Legendary Cyphers, a weekly free all-ages event every summer Friday in Union Square park since August 2013. Majesty was family to many in the scene, known to be supportive, positive, and an embodiment of everything that is Hip Hop culture. The NYC Hip Hop community mourns the loss of his vibrant energy today, but his spirit still resonates in the beats and the concrete, in the hearts and elevated minds he helped cultivate. Catch him spark off this promo for the first season:
