Vow of Volition Make the Final Round of the Battle for Warped Tour

The Vans Warped Tour was the first festival for many of us back in the day. As young'ns, it's likely we didn't necessarily think about all that went into figuring out the bands to book and play the whole shebang. Part of that process, at least locally, seems to be through a series "battle of the bands" style competitions specifically for landing a spot on the fest. Quite a few Portland bands have been furiously playing against one another for said spot, and djent/prog metal act Vow of Volition are one of the acts that made it to the finals.

Warped Tour was always the type of festival that included much in the realm of pop punk, punk punk, emo and metal, so Vow of Volition's advancement to the final round is no surprise. Their incredibly technical, at times jazzy metal stands out in Portland's pretty linear popular music scene, and is much worthy of the attention its getting.

Those that want to support Vow of Volition in driving home the permanent spot can go to the Battle for Warped Tour finals Saturday at the Hawthorne Theatre.

Mutilation Rites announces fall US tour, plays two nights at The Knit in October.

Brooklyn-based band Mutilation Rites offers a sound that fans of most metal sub-genres can mosh to, since they fuse elements of black, thrash, and death metal. The vocals on their 2014 release Harbinger employ metal's raspy, high pitched shrieks, while also utilizing the deep and guttural growls from death metal. “Black Pyramid” sets the tone for the album, coming out of the gate with a relentless assault from drummer Justin Ennis (ex-Tomb), however the band does know when to step back from the brutality and settle on slower and groovier moments. The band just announced a fall US tour kicking off with two dates at the Knit on October 16 and 17. - John Honan

CROWN LANDS - RECORDING "RISE OVER RUN"

Former Deli Toronto Band of the Month, current finalist for the 97.7 HTZ FM Rock Search Contest and one of the buzziest bands in the GTA right now; Crown Lands might be wearing a crown soon if they keep moving at this rate. This heavy-prog two piece recently recorded at the legendary Chalet Studios in Ontario and are releasing an episodic documentary of their experiences at this majestic looking studio. Episode 2 takes you into the ideas behind the new record and how it compares to their earlier EP. Plus you hear from a manager of what looks to be the most comfortable recording studio in the world. Enjoy this teaser for "Rise Over Run" from Crown Lands and see them during NXNE at Cherry Cola's on June 17th along with Blurred Vision, Flamingo Báy, Kill Sid and King Beez. - Kris Gies
